The Grain Millers’ Summit 2025

May 20, 2025 4:45 pm
The milling industry in Uganda whose majority of players are mainly small and medium millers take a big share of the grain produced in the country, therefore providing a wide market. However, the industry is faced with a number of challenges that require urgent intervention. These include;
• Poor Milling Technologies
• High power tariffs and unreliable power supply
• Poor financial literacy
• High cost of compliance to quality
• Stringent non-tariff barriers to regional trade
• Insufficient awareness of available grain quality standards among players.
The Grain Council of Uganda (TGCU) held the first grain millers’ summit with representatives of Multiple stakeholders from across the country. The Summit squarely falls under TGCU’S key priorities because it is a key vehicle through which Industry Self-Regulation will be introduced to one of the most vital segments in the grains value chain (Millers).
We are also in the process of transforming Millers to becoming a major market for the grain processors (who are mainly members of TGCU) so that the milling of raw unprocessed grain (poor quality grain) can eventually be stopped.
Purpose and Objective of the Summit:
1. Profiling the Milling Community in the Country
2. Introducing the Industry Self-Regulation
3. Preparing for Healthy Competition
4. Introducing Millers to efficient milling technologies
5. Linking the milling community to affordable financing
Anticipated Outcomes of the Summit:
• A comprehensive database of millers to inform policy and support development initiatives
.• Awareness and understanding of the Industry self-regulation guidelines.
• Increased export of grain and grain products from Uganda
• Enhanced collaboration among stakeholders to support the growth of the milling sector
Who attended the Summit?
The milling fraternity, processors, equipment suppliers, representatives of farmer associations, financial institutions, MDAs, civil society organizations and development partners among others.
